Ladies v Enniskillen (A)
Wednesday, 09 December 2009, 2:00pm - 5:00pm

It was a cold, nippy evening in Enniskillen. Enniskillen had a good start to the night, winning the first coin toss, unfortunately that was not their only win of the evening. Beginning the game against the wind things didn't look good for Letterkenny with a try from Enniskillen (within the first ten minutes) coming from a speedy centre and an even faster winger(Harriet Park). The try was unconverted despite excellent efforts from Ennisillen’s fullback (Brenda Brogan). Letterkenny's heads did not go down but again they came under attack from Enniskillen. It was almost a try (due to a few missed tackles) but was narrowly saved by Letterkenny’s flawless outhalf (Elaine Melaugh). She put in a hard tackle resulting in a sore shoulder for the young player. Elaine refused to go off the pitch as both sides were already playing 14 a side. Unfortunately, Letterkenny found themselves under attack quickly again. Enniskillen quickly moved the ball from one side of the pitch to the other allowing another try to be scored by the home team. Again this try was unconverted despite best efforts.

(As this was a first for the Letterkenny ladies team both teams along with the referee agreed that the game be played in thirds allowing both teams to catch their second breath and to see and explain how things were going wrong and how mistakes were to be rectified.)
With some constructive, supportive and encouraging words from Coach (Clodagh Llewhellin) and other experienced players on the team, Letterkenny went out fighting, heads held high in the second period of the game. The standard of rugby increased dramatically in this section. Letterkenny worked hard in defence despite Enniskillen’s best efforts and allowed no tries past. Letterkenny spent this whole second period of the game in Enniskillen’s half of the pitch. Letterkenny made their way inside the home-sides five metre line for a period resulting from a clever box-kick from outhalf (Melaugh) then a well constructed moll pushing hard from the visiting side. Due to the collapse of the maul an injury arose on the away team. This cut the Letterkenny team down to thirteen a side. With a prop missing the pack along with the back line worked hard to hold Enniskillen in their own half. The referee’s whistle blew, much to the home team’s glee and the teams huddled together, Letterkenny on one side of the field and Enniskillen on the other for another team talk.
Letterkenny went out into the last period of the game hungry for a try which unfortunately didn’t come, despite some quick breaks from Louise Clarke, Elaine Malaugh, Clodagh Llewhellin and Treise O Callaghan. These attempts were shot down by Enniskillen’s hungry fullback/captain (Brenda Brogan). Due to hard work and the unity of the home team another try was brought over the line. The powerful forwards wasted no time in bringing the ball forward (and a few of the Letterkenny ladies to the ground) before feeding the ball out to the back line. A superb try allowed the home side lead the game 15-0. A hard blow hit Letterkenny shortly with the loss of outhalf (Melaugh) due to injury to the team’s distress. A soft try then leaked through the visitors defence .This unconverted try concluded the game, Enniskillen 20 - Donegal 0.
This game helped Letterkenny’s new players get a feel for the game. It also broadened our understanding of the game.
The Letterkenny ladies would like to thank our coach Clodagh Llwhellian, our assistant coach on the day Tony O Callaghan and Enniskillen RFC for the exciting and challenging game.
