Ladies v Enniskillen (H) - CUP
Sunday, 24 January 2010

Letterkenny ladies played their 2nd cup game last Sunday at the Glebe against an experienced Enniskillen “Skins” side. However the score did not reflect the pattern of the game, as all the Enniskillen points came from clean breaks and turnovers when Letterkenny were in possession.

The home side started very brightly, with charging runs from both backs and forwards making an early statement of intent against their opponents. With a few excellent breaks from Laura Feely, Clodagh Llewhellin  and Captain Grainne Kennedy they soon found themselves on the “Skins” try line but could not force their way over and that proved costly. From the turnovers, Enniskillen looked dangerous but the defence held out, mostly led by the excellent tackling of Clodagh Llewhellin, Viktorija Vasileuska and also Laura Kenny.  However the pressure told where skins stole the ball and within minutes Enniskillen had their first points on the board with a converted try. Then before the half time whistle, they added their second try to leave the half time score 12-0.

The second half started like the first, but again the home side could not find the killer touch to break the “Skins” down and again this proved decisive. The Letterkenny defence was still standing strong but the few additional years that Enniskillen have had training together really started to show and their game plays were very effective. Letterkenny again has a few excellent breaks from Wingers Treise O Callaghan, Alison Studdart and also from flanker Viktorija but skins defence got quickly organised and these plays led to more tries and a conversion for Enniskillen leaving the final score line being a harsh 29-0. Had Letterkenny been together a little longer, then maybe they could have turned their pressure into points and made the game much closer.

All the girls can be very proud of their efforts and will continue to train and gain experience for their next match which is away to Carrickfergus in the cup on the 7th of February and going by this performance the girls will be confident of getting points on the board. Support is always welcome.
