Ulster Cup Semi Final: Letterkenny 0 : 52 Derry
The Letterkenny Ladies continued their run in the cup with an away semi final against Derry in Derry. Nerves filled the team as they knew they were up against a strong team, which have not lost a game all season. The Ladies started off extremely well although, only playing with 13 but played with an eagerness to carry the ball into contact and with an enthusiasm to make tackles. Letterkenny suffered a huge blow in the first half with an injury to a key ball runner and number 8 vika. The ladies continued to tackle well and support each other but unfortunately the more experienced Derry team came out on top and ran in several tries. Letterkenny came out in the second half up for the task ahead of them. The hits being put in, in this section of the game by both teams were exquisite. Breaks from both teams were quickly shot down by the opposition. After a second injury to another key player of the Letterkenny team, fly half Laura Kenny, the remaining girls had a huge mountain to climb as only having 11 players to the Derry’s 13. Derry used this advantage to full affect by spreading the ball through well drilled and experienced backs to simply run the pitch, which with all the defending the Letterkenny girls found it an impossible task. Final Score: 52-0 Letterkenny should be very proud of their performance from Sunday, especially as they have just started as a team three months ago and should take confidence that they played extremely well against a team that have been playing a high standard of rugby for four years now.
